SERMON TRANSCRIPT

Big Idea: The cradle that rocked the world.

I am the eldest of six kids so I have a five siblings, one sister and four brothers.

Who do you think the most spoilt one is in my family?

Who has a little brother or sister? They’re fun aren’t they…

I was 15 years old when my youngest brother was born. I remember Dad coming home from the hospital very late at night. He woke me up and said, “you have another brother.” The way I remember it is that I grunted something like “cool” and rolled back to sleep.

Whose birth do we celebrate at Christmas?

Did you know that on the night when Jesus was born God sent a messenger, an angel to tell some shepherds the good news.

You know what? The shepherds DID NOT GO BACK TO SLEEP. They were very excited. Angels and Shepherds singing out in the fields.

Why do you think they were excited?

I think they were excited because they saw some angels. That would be exciting. I’ve never seen an angel before, might be a bit scary as well.

I think they were excited because in those days no one really trusted shepherds with anything important. And this was very important news.

I think that they were excited because they were going to go and see this very special baby – wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.

They are all good reasons to be excited. I think I would be excited if I was one of those shepherds. I don’t think I’d be going back to sleep.

Do you know that the very important news that the angel told them was good news for everyone.

This is what the Bible says … Read v10-11.

10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.

This was good news for the shepherds Read v20

20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

This was good news for the people living in Bethlehem in those days. Read v17-18.

17 When [the shepherds] had seen [Jesus], they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.

But it was also good news for you and me. Even though this happened such a long time ago we can read about this good news in the Bible.

Do you remember the funny guy in the video (Christmas Connections). I like how the man kept saying … He’s the same guy!!! He was learning that the baby Jesus grew up. And that adult Jesus did and said lots of important and powerful things.

Here is a picture that reminds us of what we learn in the Bible about Jesus.

Carpenter

What’s going on in this picture? Usually sons grew up doing the same job as their dads. Joseph was a carpenter so we think that Jesus was probably a carpenter in Nazareth, like his dad. Baby Jesus grew up to be a man who live in Nazareth.

Someone with Great Authority. What is Jesus doing here? Teaching – people were amazed. Healing … anyone remember any of Jesus miracles? Calming storms and feeding crowds Raising from the dead Even showing he had authority to forgive sins. Baby Jesus grew up to be someone with great authority over demons, death disease, disasters.

Easter

Jesus died in the cross so that we could become friends with God. John 1:29

… the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

The one sent by God, his only Son to deal with our sin and rebellion completely.

We can be friends with God because of what Jesus did for us on the cross.

Baby Jesus grew up to be the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

The Forever King

One day Jesus will come back to be our King and we will see him and live with him forever in his completely fixed up world, where everything bad will come untrue, better than we can imagine.

What was your favourite part of the video … He’s the same guy!!!

At the end of our video … we need to stop seeing Christmas as an isolated event and see it as part of the continuing story of our salvation.

Christmas is the start of God’s good news story.

I love Christmas for lots of reasons. One of those reasons is that I get to hang out with some of my siblings; my sister and a few of my brothers. We will eat nice food and get presents.

I love Christmas because it reminds me that God loves me and he has done something once and for all to save me, he sent Jesus to rescue me.

I love Christmas because it is a time of year where people come along to church for a variety of reasons.

And we want to help everyone to stop seeing Christmas as an isolated event and see it as part of the continuing story of our salvation.

Mark’s Gospel. From February 2, 2025.

The shepherds went to meet Jesus. What about you?

The good news of Christmas is not just that there was a special baby born. But that God sent his son into the world so that whoever believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

This can be good news for you too.
